Located across 1.5 million acres of wetlands is the lush Everglades National Park. The park spans a large area of South Florida and makes it a must-see when visiting the Sunshine State. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, nearly one million people come to visit the Everglades each year.

You can spot all kinds of wildlife in the Everglades. There are over 350 species of birds, 40 mammal species, and 50 species of reptiles. The Florida panther, the West Indian manatee, and the American crocodile are just three of the thirty-six different rare and endangered species you can find in this biodiversity hotspot. Turtles, herons, alligators, crocodiles, manatees, or dolphins also can be seen while enjoying the sights of the mangroves.

This national park offers many activities for those coming to visit. There are 28 miles of trails, such as Shark Valley or the Snake Bright Trail, that bicyclists and walkers can enjoy. The hundreds of species of birds make bird watching another popular activity at the Everglades. If you want to head into the water, you can partake in boat tours or kayak rides as well.

The best time to pay a visit is from December to April when the temperature isn't unbearable, and the mosquitoes aren't as active. If you decide to visit during the summer, make sure to bring bug spray!
